This article highlights how severe digital exclusion remains inside UK prisons, using the example of an inmate who initially didn’t even know how to use a computer cursor. It explores how prison education programmes and in-cell digital learning tools are trying to bridge this gap by teaching fundamental digital skills that many people outside custody take for granted. The piece argues that without basic digital literacy, prisoners are at a major disadvantage when trying to access services, education and employment after release. It ultimately presents digital skills training in prisons as essential for rehabilitation and reducing reoffending in an increasingly online world.
